Learn How to Make a Roux for gumbo so you get the best rich Cajun flavor. Simply whisk together flour and either melted butter or oil, then simmer until you achieve a white, blonde, light brown, or dark color for all of your thickening needs.

KEY INGREDIENTS

Butter or Oil Flour

Heat a pan over medium-low heat. Add butter to it and allow it to melt completely. Sprinkle in flour and begin stirring immediately. Stir constantly to keep from burning. This is great to use as a thickener in soups or sauces.

WHITE ROUX

After a couple of minutes the mixture will thin and you can slow down how often you stir. After 3-5 minutes you will have a blonde roux. This is great for creamy and light-colored sauces.

BLONDE ROUX

After 10-15 minutes, you will have a light brown roux.  After 25-30 minutes you will have a dark brown roux, which is perfect for gumbo!
