- 1 sweet potato

Wash your sweet potato under cold water and scrub off excess dirt. If you don't have a brush to scrub, using a wet paper towel or kitchen towel will work just fine.
Pat your sweet potato dry and prick it with a fork. Prick deep and often--5-8 times on each side--to really make sure you get an even cook throughout the whole sweet potato.
Wrap your sweet potato in a damp paper towel and place on a microwave-safe plate. It's not completely mandatory to wrap your sweet potato in a damp paper towel, but it's an easy way to triple check that you're locking in all the moisture.
Cook your sweet potato on high power depending on the size:2-3 minutes for a 6-8 oz. sweet potato3-4 minutes for a 9-12 oz. sweet potato4-5 minutes for a 13-16 oz. sweet potato6-7 minutes for an over 1 lb. sweet potatoAfter the correct time is up, cook at 30-second increments until your sweet potato is fork tender (without give).
