Salt 

Bring vinegar, water, salt, and sugar to a boil and simmer until sugar is   dissolved. Set aside.

Place garlic cloves, spices and dill sprigs in a mason jar. Add  cucumber spears in a vertical orientation.

Pour warm vinegar solution over cucumbers and add additional water as needed to completely cover the cucumbers.

Refrigerate pickles overnight or up to 3 days for the best results.
