The Easiest 15-Minute Charred Broccolini

My love for grilling really took off after my mom gifted us a Weber gas grill two Christmases ago. Since then, whether it’s freezing cold or sweltering hot, we’re out there grilling something at least once a week.

One of the biggest surprises? Grilled Broccolini.

I’d only ever had it at fancy restaurants, but one night Justin brushed some with oil, sprinkled on salt and pepper, gave it a quick char, and finished it off with a squeeze of lemon. (The secret finishing touch!) And WOW was it good!

It’s easily one of the simplest (and fastest!) veggie sides you can throw on the grill. Ready in under 15 minutes and always a hit.

Ingredients and Substitutions

For the exact measurements and detailed instructions, please see the recipe card below.

Broccolini, lemon, oil, salt, and pepper are the only ingredients for this grilled broccolini recipe.
  • Broccolini. Depending on how big your bunches are at the store, you’ll need about 2-3 bunches to get 1 pound.
  • Oil. I prefer using a high smoke-point oil such as avocado oil when grilling, but olive oil can be used if that’s all you have available.
  • Lemon. Seems unnecessary, but just a hint of fresh lemon juice brings out the natural flavors of the broccolini and makes it taste SO good!

Tools I use when grilling: I always have some relatively long metal tongs available so your hand doesn’t have to get too close to the heat.

Step-by-step Instructions

Please see the recipe card below for the full instructions, ingredient amounts, and a printable recipe.

Preheat the grill and prep the broccolini.

Get your grill going over medium-high heat, around 375–400°F.

Trim off any leaves (these will burn quickly on the grill!) and toss the broccolini with avocado oil and salt until evenly coated.

Pro Tip: Wait to add the black pepper until after grilling so it doesn’t burn!

A hand removes leaves from a broccolini stalk.

Grill until tender and charred.

Add the broccolini to the grill in a single layer and cook for 6–8 minutes, flipping occasionally. If the florets start to char too quickly, move them to a cooler part of the grill or upper rack to finish cooking.

Tongs pick up a broccolini stalk from the grill.

Finish with lemon.

Remove the broccolini from the grill and serve with black pepper and a big squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

Pro Tip: For even more flavor, try grilling your lemon halves before juicing!

Grilling broccolini and lemon is a quick and easy way to make a good side dish.

FAQs

Will an indoor grill pan work?

It will, but it won’t have that same smoky flavor you get over a gas or charcoal grill. To grill on an indoor pan, head it to medium-high and cook the broccolini for 6-8 minutes, flipping occasionally.

What’s the best way to store leftovers?

Grilled broccolini really tastes best when it’s fresh as it begins to lose it’s crisp texture upon cooling. However, you can store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat in a skillet or air fryer. Or, even enjoy it cold on top of salads!

Can I use broccoli instead of broccolini?

It’s not advised since broccoli florets are much smaller (meaning they may fall through the greats) and are much tougher (meaning they’ll burn before becoming tender!)

Notes

  • Pepper: Avoid tossing the broccolini in pepper before grilling as it has a tendency to burn when exposed to high heat.
  • Lemons: Place two lemon halves onto the grill, cut side-down, and grill for 2-3 minutes before juicing for extra flavor.
  • Tender texture: If the grill is too hot, you may end up scorching the broccolini florets before they’re cooked through. If that happens simply remove them from the hot part of the grill and place on the upper rack. Close the grill and continue to cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until tender.
